13 August 2024

Electric cars are becoming more commonplace on our roads with the number of electric and plug-in hybrid cars likely to continue to increase further in future with petrol cars likely to be phased out over the coming years.

However, electric cars need regular charging points. These can either be at home, in the office or in other public spaces. If you are looking to buy your own domestic EV charging point, the choice is endless, with multiple brands and suppliers available on the market. Here at East Yorkshire Solar, we are an impartial supplier and fitter of all types and brands of EV chargers, meaning we can advise you independently and recommend the best charger for your needs. But what are the different types of EV chargers, and which one is right for you? Take a look at our latest blog to find out more.

Types of EV Charges

Multiple types of EV chargers are available for cars; they all vary in connectors, speed, and systems. There are two main types of chargers: tethered and untethered cable. A tethered cable is permanently attached to the charging unit without needing to carry additional wires, while untethered cables detach from the charging unit, allowing compatibility with multiple EV models.

EV chargers vary in terms of connections and speeds, and they can also come with a variety of different features such as smart LED charging status, and multiple scheduling options.

EV Charger Connection Types

The most common EV connectors include;

  • 3 PIN – Supplied for EV home socket charging
  • TYPE 1 – Usually found on older EV cars (3kW to 7kW)
  • TYPE 2 – The most common EV charger in the UK (3kW to 43kW)
  • CHAdeMO – Used for rapid charging (23kW to 100kW)
  • CCS; Combo type 1 & 2 – common rapid charger (50kW to 350kW)

You can also get connectors depending on your needs and EV car model, such as;

CEE Sockets – A standardised plug used throughout Europe, providing a stable and safe EV charging current in outdoor settings. Making them a great solution for camping, allowing your EV to be hooked up using an adaptor.

Tesla Sockets—Tesla has its own network of chargers called superchargers, which can be commonly found in motorway service areas or hotels. Some Tesla models have socket adaptors, allowing them to use public EV charger connectors.

EV Charger Speeds

3kW Home Socket Charger: Ideal for slow-charging, usually a 3-pin socket or Type 1 connector. Charging can take up to 8-12 hours to charge, making it an ideal method for overnight charging.

7kW: Home EV Charger: A faster EV charger for the home and can be installed in under a few hours. These chargers usually use a Type 2 socket and can charge your vehicle from empty in 6-8 hours.

22kW Fast Public Charger: This charger is more often found in public spaces like companies, public car parks, supermarkets, or motorways and can charge your car battery to full in only 3 hours.

50kW Rapid Public Charger: Offering rapid charging allowing you to quickly charge your battery to 80% usually allowing you to charge your EV in 40 minutes.

350kW Ultra-Rapid Public Charger: This is for large commercial vehicles that allow them to charge in under 20 minutes.

Domestic vs. Business EV Chargers

EV Charger For Your Home

Having a private EV charger enhances the security of your vehicle by ensuring a reliable and safe charging environment. It provides both convenience and flexibility with faster charging times and better compatibility with your specific electric car model.

EV Chargers for Your Businesses

Having an EV charger at your business can also be beneficial for staff, providing them with convenient and cost-effective charging options while they work, promoting a greener workplace, and supporting their transition to electric vehicles.

Invest in an EV charger

Investing in an EV charger for your home or business can give you a cost-effective solution to charging your electric vehicle, offering increased convenience and meaning you can always be well-prepared for your journey. A readily available EV charger is an excellent alternative to public stations, providing you with peace of mind and a cost-effective solution to charging your electric or plug-in vehicle.

If you are considering investing in EV charging, assess your commuting patterns, typical driving ranges, and high-traffic areas.
